Heatstroke

The summer heat is here! Take the time to plan for weather conditions when taking your pups with you on your adventures this summer.  If you do lots of daytime hiking and exploring during the hotter months talk with your trainer about how to safely teach your dog about cooling coats, boots, and other equipment to keep them cool and comfy.  Remember that dogs with shortened faces like bulldogs, pugs, or boxers are at more risk of overheating and dogs with white or hairless areas are more prone to sunburn.

The 4th of July is only a month away and we've already seen some serious thunderstorms this season.  Whether or not your dog has anxiety around these loud sounds, take the time now to make plans to keep your pet(s) safe this summer.  Check and update tags and microchip information and think about a quiet(er), safe place your dog can hang out during the festivities.  You can find more ideas here.  If your dog does have trouble with loud noises, now is the time to start working with your trainer and vet on a plan to help them out this year.

Check your dog(s) for foxtails.  They're in full force in Denver right now, and we're seeing them on lots of dogs, even when they haven't ventured far from home.  Especially check the face, ears, and between the toes.  More from Whole Dog Journal here.
